When all else fails, go underground. The Valley is peppered with cold speakeasies and dark hole-in-the-wall spots offering tall, icy drinks and respite from the summer sun. Here are a few places where we seek seasonal salvation…
Rokerij in Arcadia /Phoenix offers a private booths and a long copper top bar with several flat screen tv’s and fresh squeezed grapefruit for our preferred summer cocktail, Greyhounds. The menu is based on the original Richardson’s menu featuring exceptional New Mexican dishes.
Find the Cellar Pub inside Sun Devil Liquors in Mesa offers a cold dark wine cellar and comfy beer pub with a solid selection of tasting specials. Although food is not prepared on site, a select menu can be brought in from neighboring restaurants.
The Salt Cellar in south Scottsdale is another excellent summer escape you’ve past a million times, but never probably never stopped. This is a spot that takes you to the coast and delivers hand selected succulent seasonal lobster, scallops, crab and shrimp. Be sure to check the “market board” menu as owner Richard Huie and Chef Kurt Theleman secure different seasonal fish throughout the year. You will also find the reverse happy hour and late night specials are some of the best in town. The Shrimp Reno appetizer is a must.
Litte Woody in Arcadia is dark, cold–and while not underground–it is the kind of place where the sun don’t shine. Craft drinks, good beer and delicious food will sustain you during the hot summer months. Play skee ball or foosball while you waste the summer daze away.
The Ostrich in downtown Chandler has been recently renovated, and has a historically nefarious past. Located directly below Crust Restaurant the lounge offers craft cocktails and cooler temps.
